History of Trade Unions in Botswana

RATIONALE

Appreciation and knowledge of the role of trade unions are also key to further understanding of labour laws, industrial relations and the potential role of trade unions in national development and the creation of peaceful industrial relations necessary to attract foreign investment and economic growth. This short course lays the foundation for knowledge of Botswanaโ€™s tripartite relations by tracing the key moments and achievements of the trade union movement from the 1930s to 1940s.

PURPOSE

The aim of this course is to equip participants with the knowledge of the evolution of trade unions and their importance for the workers in Botswana, the membership composition among trade unions and the legislative process of trade unions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Trace the history of the trade union movement in Botswana since the 1930s and 1940s;
  • Outline the structure of trade unions in Botswana;
  • Discuss the evolution and growth of the trade union movement in Botswana; and
  • Analyze the links between the historical development of labour legislation and trade unions.
